Poornaprajna College B.Sc. Students Bring Hands-On Science Learning to Grades 5–8
The classrooms of Alevoor Poornaprajna Public School (APPS)
turned into an exciting centre of scientific exploration when students of the B.Sc.
programme of Poornaprajna College (PPC) visited the school as part of a Science
Outreach Programme.
The visiting students presented a series of fascinating chemistry experiments and demonstrations for the students of Grades 5, 6, 7 and 8, providing the young learners with an opportunity to experience scientific concepts beyond textbooks and conventional classroom teaching.
The programme was lively, interactive and filled with curiosity as students watched chemical reactions unfold before their eyes.
🧪 The Spectacular
“Elephant Toothpaste” Experiment
One of the major attractions of the programme was the popular Elephant Toothpaste experiment.
The sudden formation of a large amount of foam immediately captured the attention of the students. The dramatic demonstration generated considerable excitement and naturally encouraged children to wonder why such a reaction occurs.
Rather than simply reading about chemical reactions, students were able to observe a reaction taking place in real time, making the underlying scientific idea easier to appreciate and remember.
The demonstration showed how even seemingly simple chemical
substances can produce striking results under appropriate experimental
conditions.
🌈 Chemistry in a World of
Colours
Students were equally fascinated by the colourful chemical reactions demonstrated during the programme.
Changes in colour provided an excellent visual introduction
to the idea that chemical reactions can often be identified through observable
changes.
For young learners, watching colours appear and transform before them made chemistry considerably more engaging than merely studying descriptions and equations from a textbook.
The demonstrations prompted questions, discussion and
enthusiastic responses from the students, creating exactly the kind of
curiosity that forms the foundation of scientific learning.
🔥 Flame Tests – When
Salts Produce Different Colours
Another particularly interesting demonstration involved flame
tests using different salts.
Students observed that different substances can produce characteristic
colours when introduced into a flame. The colourful flames were an exciting
sight for the children and gave them an opportunity to see how substances can
behave differently depending on their chemical composition.
The activity beautifully demonstrated how chemistry allows scientists to identify and distinguish substances through their observable properties.
For many students, concepts that might otherwise appear
abstract became understandable when they could actually see the colours
produced during the experiment.
Science Beyond the Textbook
The Science Outreach Programme highlighted an important
principle of science education: science is best understood when students are
given opportunities to observe, question, experiment and experience.
A textbook can explain what happens during a chemical
reaction, but watching the reaction occur creates an entirely different level
of understanding.
The programme therefore complemented regular classroom learning by allowing students to connect theoretical concepts with actual scientific demonstrations.
The young learners enthusiastically watched the experiments
and interacted with the visiting college students. Their questions and
responses reflected the curiosity generated by the programme.
Developing Scientific Temper Among Young Learners
Programmes of this nature play an important role in
developing scientific temper from an early age.
Science education is not merely about remembering scientific
facts. It is also about encouraging children to ask:
Why does this happen?
What will happen if something is changed?
How can we test an idea?
What evidence do we have?
When children are encouraged to observe and ask such
questions, they gradually develop the ability to think logically and
scientifically.
The demonstrations conducted during the outreach programme provided exactly such an environment for the students of APPS.
Inspiring Interest in STEM Education
Exposure to enjoyable hands-on scientific experiences during
the school years can also encourage students to develop a lasting interest in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
For students of Grades 5–8, this is an important stage at
which curiosity about the natural world can develop into a deeper interest in
scientific learning.
Seeing senior students confidently conducting experiments
can also be inspiring. It enables younger children to visualise themselves as
future science students, researchers, doctors, engineers, teachers or
professionals in other scientific fields.
College Students as Young Science Mentors
The participation of the B.Sc. students of Poornaprajna
College added another valuable dimension to the programme.
By demonstrating experiments to younger students and
interacting with them, the college students served as young science mentors,
making the learning experience friendly and approachable.
Such interaction between college and school students can be
mutually enriching. While school students benefit from exposure to practical
science, college students gain valuable experience in scientific communication
and explaining concepts to younger learners.
The outreach programme therefore created a meaningful bridge
between higher education and school education.
Learning Through Observation, Interaction and Experience
The programme was not merely a demonstration to be watched
passively. It created an atmosphere of interaction in which students were
encouraged to observe carefully and respond to what they witnessed.
Activities of this kind develop several important learning
abilities, including:

Considering the enthusiastic response of the students and
the educational value of the programme, APPS sincerely hopes that such hands-on
science demonstrations can, if feasible, be organised regularly—perhaps even
once every month.
Different sessions could introduce students to fascinating concepts from chemistry, physics, biology and other areas of science, gradually developing a culture of experimentation and scientific enquiry among children.
Regular interaction with college students and science
educators could make a valuable contribution towards nurturing the next
generation of scientifically curious young minds.
Education Becomes Meaningful When Children Experience
What They Learn
At Alevoor Poornaprajna Public School, we believe that
meaningful education extends beyond classroom walls.
A child may forget a scientific definition learned from a
page, but the excitement of watching a colourful flame, an unexpected chemical
reaction or a spectacular column of foam can remain in memory for years.
The Science Outreach Programme demonstrated how
collaboration between educational institutions can transform learning into an
enjoyable and inspiring experience.
