Training and Awareness Program on Child Safety and POCSO at Alevoor Poornaprajna Public School

On Friday, 24 April 2026, Alevoor Poornaprajna Public School organised a comprehensive Training and Awareness Program on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and child safety. The initiative was designed to equip educators with the knowledge, sensitivity, and practical tools required to safeguard children in an increasingly complex social environment. Recognising that schools play a pivotal role in shaping students' academic, emotional, and physical well-being, the program underscored the urgent need for awareness and proactive engagement with child protection laws.

Purpose and Significance of the Program

The POCSO Act is a landmark legislation in India aimed at protecting children from sexual abuse, harassment, and exploitation. However, awareness and correct implementation remain key challenges. This program sought to bridge that gap by educating teachers on the legal framework, their responsibilities, and the importance of creating a safe and supportive school environment.

In today’s context, where children face various vulnerabilities both online and offline, educators' roles extend beyond teaching subjects. Teachers are often the first point of contact for students in distress. Therefore, understanding child protection laws like POCSO is not just beneficial—it is essential. The program emphasised that awareness is the first step toward prevention, and informed educators can make a significant difference in ensuring the safety and dignity of every child.

Inaugural Ceremony

The event commenced with a dignified inaugural ceremony that set a solemn and purposeful tone for the day. The traditional lamp-lighting ceremony symbolised the dispelling of ignorance and the spread of awareness—a fitting beginning for a program dedicated to child safety.

The ceremony was jointly conducted by distinguished dignitaries: Dr Sureshramana Mayya, Dr Ashok Kamath, and Ms Sandhya. Their presence reflected the institution’s strong commitment to addressing critical issues affecting students and fostering a culture of responsibility and awareness.

Following the inauguration, the gathering was formally welcomed, and the program's objectives were briefly outlined, highlighting the importance of collective effort in safeguarding children.

Insightful Presentation by Dr. Ashok Kamath

The highlight of the program was an in-depth and highly engaging session delivered by Dr. Ashok Kamath. Drawing upon his extensive experience in the field of education and training, Dr. Kamath provided a clear and structured understanding of the POCSO framework.

He began by explaining the key provisions of the Act in an accessible and informative manner. He emphasised that the law is designed to be child-friendly, ensuring that the process of reporting and addressing offences is sensitive to the needs and emotional state of the child. He also highlighted educators' legal obligations, including the mandatory reporting of suspected cases and the consequences of failing to do so.

A central theme of his presentation was the crucial role of teachers in safeguarding children. He stressed that teachers are not merely observers but active participants in ensuring student safety. According to him, vigilance, empathy, and responsiveness are essential qualities that every teacher must cultivate. Being observant of behavioural changes, maintaining open lines of communication, and creating a safe space where students feel comfortable sharing their concerns are all integral aspects of this responsibility.

Dr. Kamath further elaborated on the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive school environment. He encouraged teachers to build a culture of safety where respect, trust, and awareness are deeply ingrained in the school community. Such an environment not only helps in preventing incidents but also empowers students to speak up without fear.

Another significant aspect of his session was the emphasis on collaboration between teachers, parents, and students. He pointed out that child safety is a shared responsibility and that effective communication with parents is vital in ensuring consistent support for children both at home and at school.

To enhance understanding, Dr. Kamath presented a series of case studies that illustrated real-life scenarios. These examples were particularly impactful, as they demonstrated both the appropriate application of the POCSO Act and instances of its misuse. By discussing these cases, he provided valuable insights into the complexities involved in handling such situations and the importance of exercising sensitivity, fairness, and sound judgment.

The session was interactive, encouraging participants to reflect, ask questions, and engage in meaningful discussion. Teachers gained not only theoretical knowledge but also practical guidance on responding effectively in challenging situations.

Concluding Session

The program concluded with remarks by Sri A P Kodancha, who also coordinated the entire event. In his address, he thoughtfully summarized the key takeaways from the session and reflected on the evolving role of teachers in today’s educational landscape.

He emphasised that modern educators must go beyond academic instruction to become mentors, guardians, and advocates for their students’ well-being. He acknowledged the complexities and responsibilities that come with this role and encouraged teachers to remain committed to continuous learning and awareness.

Sri Kodancha expressed sincere gratitude to Dr. Ashok Kamath for his enlightening and thought-provoking presentation. He also extended his appreciation to the school leadership, staff, and participants for their active involvement and support in making the program a success. His words reinforced the importance of collective effort and shared responsibility in building a safe and nurturing environment for children.

A Step Towards a Safer Future

The Training and Awareness Program on POCSO and child safety proved to be a highly impactful and meaningful initiative. It not only enhanced educators' knowledge and awareness but also inspired a renewed sense of responsibility and commitment to student welfare.

By equipping teachers with the necessary understanding and tools, the program has laid a strong foundation for fostering a culture of safety within the school. It has also encouraged open dialogue and collaboration among all stakeholders, ensuring that the well-being of children remains a top priority.

As the school community moves forward, the insights gained from this session will undoubtedly contribute to creating a more secure, supportive, and responsive environment for students. Such initiatives reaffirm the institution’s dedication to holistic education—where safety, dignity, and care are valued as much as academic excellence.

In conclusion, the program stands as a testament to the school’s proactive approach and unwavering commitment to protecting its students. It is a positive step toward ensuring that every child feels safe, respected, and empowered—both within the classroom and beyond.
