Celebrating Tradition: Tiger Dance at Shri Krishna Janmastami, Udupi
The vibrant town of Udupi came alive on 15th September 2025 with the Shri Krishna Janmastami and Vittala Pindi celebrations, where the streets echoed with devotion, music, and cultural fervor. Among the most captivating highlights of the festival was the Tiger Dance tradition, locally known as Pili Vesha (Hulivesha), a unique folk art form that symbolizes power, courage, and devotion.
Pili Vesha: A Unique Cultural Expression
Pili Vesha, or Tiger Dance, is an age-old tradition of coastal Karnataka, particularly in Udupi and Mangaluru, where performers paint their bodies with tiger stripes and dance energetically to the beats of drums. This art form is closely tied to Shri Krishna Janmastami, adding color and energy to the grand Vittala Pindi procession.
In Udupi, the Rajangana becomes the hub of this spectacular celebration, where troupes of performers—both young and old—compete with passion and creativity. The event is blessed and supported by the revered Ashta Mathas of Udupi, who encourage the preservation and promotion of this vibrant cultural heritage.
Our Little Star Performer
This year’s celebration was made even more special with the participation of our school’s play group child, Shri Hari, who proudly performed in the Kinni Pilli (Little Tiger) Dance at Rajangana.
Dressed as a young tiger, he mesmerized the audience with his enthusiasm, charm, and tireless effort. His performance not only brought smiles to everyone present but also highlighted the importance of passing on local traditions and cultural values to the younger generation.
Congratulations and Encouragement
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to little Shri Hari for his wonderful performance at Vittala Pindi. His spirit, energy, and confidence are an inspiration for all our young learners.
As a school, we take pride in nurturing both academic excellence and cultural awareness, ensuring our children grow with a sense of identity, pride, and respect for the rich heritage of Udupi.
